History of Balmoral Golf Course

Located in the beautiful rolling land of central Alberta, Balmoral Golf Course welcomes all levels of golfers. When Scottish settlers established homes here, they thought it looked so much like the Balmoral region in Scotland that they chose to name this district after the region. When the course created the same name was chosen. The course opened in 1963, sporting 9 holes and sand greens. Eventually, the course was expanded to include 18 holes and grass greens.

Balmoral Golf Course was the dream of founder Lewis Herder. The land was his farm and he envisioned making it into an affordable family golf course. Construction started in 1959 and the course opened in 1963. Sadly, Lewis passed away in the winter of 1965, so he was never able to see his golf course completed. His son Charlie, and his wife Margaret, left their careers and took over the operation of the course.

To convert the farmland to a golf course, Charlie created a tree nursery behind the 11th green and they were moved on to the course. We are very proud of the variety of trees that line the fairways. We have many fruit-bearing trees and shrubs and even a couple of sugar maples and olive trees. Because of our family’s passion to grow the golf course we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2013.

Our goal has always been to provide a lovely place for everyone to enjoy a round of golf and to create an atmosphere where you feel like part of our family.

The course is now operated by Charlie's daughter Lesley, with her husband John. It is our pleasure to have you join our family on the course.

Testimonials

Balmoral is more than a golf course, it's a community that I have had the privilege to be a part of for over 17 years. It's where I spend quality time with my Dad during the spring, summer and fall seasons. The early morning tee times, the quick nine holes after work, just walking the course and enjoying family time. Now I have my own kids and it's the same for us. We get to walk the same course and play with my Dad. That’s three generations playing the game of golf at Balmoral. It's not about birdies or pars, it's about the community that Lesley and John and the staff have created when you walk onto the course...

I have been a member at Balmoral Golf Course for almost three decades and have had the pleasure of watching this course grow and change, all for the better. The owners are more than just that - they are very much hands-on, involved in this business and are on the course. To me, this underlines what it means to create a welcoming golf club. The staff on the course always seem to have time to stop and ask you how the round is going. They work hard in order to give us the best conditions possible. It’s all the little things they all do which make you feel comfortable being out at Balmoral...

I have been a member of Balmoral golf course for more than 25 years. I have found the staff very friendly. They make a real effort to ensure you have a great day by placing members with compatible people to make up foursomes. The course is very walkable and the greens keepers make sure it is in great shape. The front nine is wide open while the back nine is more challenging. If you have not played this course in a while you will find many pleasant changes as they have added another set of tee boxes. This is definitely Central Alberta's hidden gem.
